Research Extension Assistant Professor or Instructor, Animal Science
Job Summary
The College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences (CAENS) invites applications for a full‑time faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in the area(s) of animal and veterinary sciences. The appointment will involve research, extension and/or teaching responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Teach courses in animal and veterinary sciences.
- Provide leadership in animal and/or veterinary science related research and extension programs working with socially and historically disadvantaged farmers in Alabama, particularly the Black Belt Region, using innovative practices with an emphasis on sustainable meat goat and beef cattle production systems.
- Collaborate with colleagues in a complementary role to carry out current and develop new programming on animal production to train producers and other stakeholders as an active member of the TU Cooperative Extension program.
- Establish and maintain competitive extramural funded programming in animal and veterinary sciences that serves the livestock industry in Alabama and beyond.
- Pursue creative, scholarly and professional activities at all appropriate levels, including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.
- Participate in student advisement, curriculum development, student activities and collegewide committees.
- Work closely with undergraduate and graduate students within the college and other stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, or a related field or DVM, with a strong foundation in molecular biology/biotechnology and related areas, including data science.
- Record of successful teaching and demonstrated scholarship.
Physical Demands
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Ability to walk short distances.
- Ability to lift and carry parcels, packages and other items.
- Ability to view a computer terminal.

Skills and Attributes
Knowledge:
- A proven interest and understanding of animal production and the ability to develop a research/extension program in animal sciences.
- Record of peer‑reviewed publications (journal articles, technical documents, etc.).
Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience with grant applications and industry support for educational initiatives is preferred.
Ability:
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- University‑level teaching experience is also preferred.
